IP Lock vs GPS Geofence Time Clock: Which Wins?

If you’re shopping for a time clock to stop off-site or “buddy” punching, you’ll run into two location controls again and again: office-IP locking and GPS geofencing. They sound similar — both try to confirm a person is actually at work before the clock starts — but they work in completely different ways, fail in different ways, and suit different teams.

What each control actually does

A GPS geofence draws a circle around your work site and checks the employee’s phone location when they tap “clock in.” Inside the circle, the punch goes through; outside it, it’s flagged or refused. It’s a property of the device’s reported location.

An office-IP lock checks the network the punch is coming from. Every internet connection has a public IP address; your office Wi-Fi has one (or a known set). Flag an employee as office-only and they can clock in or out only when their device is on an allowlisted address. It’s a property of which network you’re connected to.

That difference — reported location versus actual network — is the whole story.

Spoofability: the part nobody likes to say out loud

GPS location is software-reported, and software can lie. Fake-GPS apps, developer-mode location overrides, and rooted phones can all tell a clock-in app that a phone is standing in the parking lot when it’s on the couch. We say this plainly because it matters: GPS is a deterrent, not proof of presence. It raises the effort required to cheat, and for honest teams that’s often enough — but a motivated buddy-puncher can get around it from home.

An office-IP lock can’t be faked the same way. To produce your office’s public IP, the device has to actually be on your office network. There’s no app that makes a phone at home appear to be on your shop’s Wi-Fi without genuinely connecting to it. No location permission, no personal-phone requirement.
